Academy Awards Month 2025 – March 2025

Academy Awards Month is celebrated every March. Most people know the Academy Awards as the Oscars. They are awarded for technical and artistic merit in the film industry. The Oscars are considered to be the most prestigious and significant awards in the entertainment industry worldwide. These awards were first presented in 1929. Award winners receive a gold-plated statuette commonly called an Oscar. Winners are chosen from the following 24 categories: production design, editing, original score, original song, costume design, makeup and hairstyling, sound mixing, sound editing, visual effects, foreign-language film, animated feature film, animated short, live-action short, documentary feature, best picture, actor, actress, supporting actor, supporting actress, directing, original screenplay, adapted screenplay, cinematography, and documentary short.

History of Academy Awards Month

The first Academy Awards ceremony was presented on May 16, 1929. A banquet at the Roosevelt Hotel’s Blossom Room with 270 attendees took place. However, at that time they had announced the award recipients three months earlier. The following year the Academy kept the results secret but gave an advance list to newspapers for publication at 11 p.m. This system continued until 1940 when the “Los Angeles Times” published the winners in its evening edition. This system prompted the sealed envelope in use today. By the second year, the Los Angeles radio station produced a live broadcast due to the public enthusiasm for the Awards. The Academy Awards were first televised in 1953 in the United States, and since 1969 they have been broadcast internationally. By the 20th century, the ceremony had become a major event since it is viewed by millions and attended by notable hosts. Interviews on the red carpet also became an integral part of the event, with much attention focused on the attendees’ ensembles. Viewership started to decline in the late 2010s; therefore, the academy announced several changes to the ceremony’s broadcast, which included a limit of three hours, beginning in 2019, and an earlier air date, beginning in 2020.To be eligible for an award, a film must be publicly exhibited for paid admission for at least one week at a commercial theater in Los Angeles between January 1 and midnight of December 31, except for foreign-language films, which are submitted by their country of origin and need not have been shown in the United States. Documentaries and short films are eligible on a different level since they have other requirements and are officially submitted by their producers, whereas music awards require the musical artist to file a submission form.
