The band caught the attention of Frank Zappa, who released their first two albums, “Pretties for You” (1969) and “Easy Action” (1970). Both albums tended towards psychedelia, and neither was successful.Alice Cooper’s unhinged act was featured anonymously in the 1970 film “Diary of a Mad Housewife” before the band moved to Detroit. They honored their music under the direction of producer Bob Ezrin, and their third album, “Love It to Death” (1971), found an audience and yielded the hit ‘I’m Eighteen.’ The successor, ‘Killer’ (1971), was another hit. The title track from “School’s Out” (1972) was a Top Ten hit in the United States and reached the top of the U.K charts. The band reached its peak with “Billion Dollar Babies” (1973) and the song ‘No More Mr. Nice Guy.’ However, “Muscle of Love,” released in late 1973, was less successful, both commercially and musically, and proved to be the last album recorded by the band Alice Cooper.Cooper legally changed his name to Alice Cooper and released his first solo album, “Welcome to My Nightmare,” in 1975. His next album, “Alice Cooper Goes to Hell” (1976), was also immensely successful. His next albums were disappointments, however, things took an ever-increasing toll due to his alcohol and cocaine addiction. Still, in 1976, he married Sheryl Goddard. In 1984, Goddard filed for divorce, but later they reconciled and have been together ever since.After being hospitalized in 1983, Cooper regained his health and achieved sobriety, and later regained the spotlight with “Constrictor” (1986) and “Trash” (1989). In the 1980s, he began making appearances in low-budget horror films such as John Carpenter’s “Prince of Darkness” (1987) and wrote music for other films, notably ‘He’s Back’ for “Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI” (1986). Cooper continued to tour, often with other heavy metal bands, and later notable albums have included “Hey Stoopid,” (1991) “The Last Temptation,” (1994) “Dragontown,” (2001), “Dirty Diamonds” (2005), “Along Came a Spider” ( 2008; a concept album about a fictional serial killer), “Welcome 2 My Nightmare” (2011), “Paranormal” (2017), and “Detroit Stories” (2021).Cooper has also acted occasionally, notably appearing as himself in the films “Wayne’s World” (1992) and “Dark Shadows” (2012). He also played the title character’s father in “Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare” (1991). His television credits included guest appearances on shows such as “That ’70s Show.” In 2018, he played King Herod in the T.V. movie “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert.” Her syndicated radio show, “Nights with Alice Cooper,” premiered in 2004. It was the subject of the biographical documentary “Super Duper Alice Cooper” (2014). In 2011, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the band Alice Cooper.
