Nisa Muhammad, the founder of the Washington, D.C. nonprofit Wedded Bliss Foundation, created the holiday in 2003. Black Marriage Day seeks to promote healthy relationships among Black youth, singles, and couples so that more Black children can benefit from the advantages of a two-parent home. A year after she launched her campaign, 30 cities throughout the country had signed on. The national celebration has since grown and is now observed in more than 300 communities.Every year, Black Marriage Day is observed in city halls, community centers, institutions of worship, and other metropolitan areas around the country. Black Marriage Day is one of the Wedded Bliss Foundation’s main events. Wedded Bliss Foundation was established in 2001 by executive director Nisa I. Muhammad. It has evolved from humble beginnings into a non-profit organization supporting families and communities across the U.S.The non-profit aims to change the narrative of black relationships and help create lasting change. Its events aim to support adults and teens in building and maintaining healthy relationships as well as marriages. The goal is to create a loving and welcoming environment for children. The Wedded Bliss Foundation organizes sessions, technical assistance, and professional training for those that need it.
