History of Celebrate Exchange Day

Celebrate Exchange Day is observed on the anniversary of the founding of the first local Exchange Club in 1911 in Detroit, Michigan by Charles A. Berkey. The organization was founded because the group wanted to promote a free-flowing exchange of ideas between individuals on how to better serve their communities. The second local club was established in 1913 in Toledo, Ohio, and two more clubs in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Cleveland, Ohio soon followed. These four local clubs were chartered in 1917 by the National Exchange Club (NEC) when the latter was organized as a non-profit, educational organization.Over the years, the National Exchange Club has sponsored activities under their Programs of Service, namely, Americanism, youth programs, and community service. The organization also has a national program in place where members contribute toward the mission to end child abuse. The members of the National Exchange Club work to fit their programs to the needs of American citizens — this includes youth mentoring, assisting students to get college scholarships, and providing services to the underprivileged sections of American society. The organization has been a significant part of American history. For example, in the early days of aviation progress in the United States, the National Exchange Club adopted ‘aviation’ as part of its Programs of Service. The National Exchange Club has worked to enrich the lives of communities across the nation for decades. The organization celebrated a century’s worth of National Conventions in 2018 in Reno.
