After the Russo-Turkish War in 1812, the city became the capital of Bessarabia. After Bessarabia declared independence from the crumbling Russian empire and later joined the Kingdom of Romania, Chisinau became the second-largest city in Romania by 1919. By June 1940, when the region was annexed by the Soviet Union. Chisinau became the capital of the recently established Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic.
