History of Crown Princess Mette-Marit's day

Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby was born on August 19, 1973, in Kristiansand, southern Norway, to a local newspaper journalist, Sven O. Høiby, and a former bank employee, Marit Tjessem. It so happened that her parents divorced, and her father later married a professional stripper Renate Barsgard. She has a sister and two older brothers, including Per Høiby, the executive director of the PR agency First House. Her half-brother Trond Berntsen, from her mother’s marriage to Rolf Berntsen in 1994, died in the 2011 terrorist attacks in Norway. Mette-Marit grew up in Kristiansand, spending a lot of weekends and holidays in the nearby Setesdal Valley and on the coast, where she learned to swim. In her youth, she was active in the local youth club Slettheia, where she was also the head of activities. As a teenager, she played volleyball and then participated as a judge and coach.Being a part-time student, it took six years, longer than usual, to complete her high school education before attending college preparatory courses at Agder College. Then she worked as a waitress at Café Engebret in Oslo. At the end of the 1990s, Mette-Marit visited the Quart Festival, Norway’s largest music festival, in her hometown of Kristiansand, where she met Crown Prince Haakon, who would become her husband in the future. When Crown Prince Haakon and Mette-Marit announced the engagement, the reaction from the public and the media was negative. But, later, people changed their minds because they were convinced of her intelligence, dignity, and wisdom. Haakon presented Matte-Marit with the same engagement ring that his grandfather, King Olav V, and his father, King Harald V, had given to their fiancé. The couple married on August 25, 2001, in Oslo Cathedral. After marriage, she received the title of Her Royal Highness Crown Princess of Norway.
