Desperation Day, celebrated on February 13 every year, was created by the T.V. character Barney Stinson, as a day on which singles desperately try to find a Valentine’s Day date. ‘Desperation Day’ is the 16th episode of season six of the American sitcom “How I Met Your Mother.” Close to Valentine’s eve, the character Lily mentions that she is lonely because her partner, Marshall, is away living with his mother. She talks about how especially lonely she is, seeing as Valentine’s Day is approaching. Eventually, Lily travels down to convince her partner to return for Valentine’s Day. Concurrently, two other characters, Ted and Zoey, are happily dating though they have agreed to take things slow. Zoey invites Ted to help bake cookies one night; and when he describes the situation to the rest of the pack as weird, they tell him he’s being asked to spend the night. Ted is eventually sent home by his girlfriend for being presumptuous. On February 13, the day before Valentine’s Day, Zoey apologizes and tells Ted she is ready to get serious. Ted, however, withdraws due to anxiety and pressure. He soon joins Marshall as a way of avoiding committing to a relationship with Zoey. Later in the episode, Barney claims that single women will find themselves desperate on Desperation Day, the eve of Valentine’s Day, and this is how the day came into being.
