Joseph David Keery, better known as Joe Keery, was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts, on April 24, 1992. His parents are Thomas Keery and Laura Keery, and he grew up surrounded by four sisters — he is the second oldest. He attended River Valley Charter School for elementary and middle school and then moved over to the Newburyport High School. When Keery was younger, he attended Theater in the Open, which was a performing arts camp at Maudslay State Park. He ultimately began his acting career in high school and went on to study at the Theater School at DePaul University, graduating in 2014.After he graduated from DePaul University, Keery began going to auditions, and went to over one hundred auditions before he landed his role as Steve Harrington in “Stranger Things.” Keery has appeared in many films and series over the years. He had a role in 2015’s “Empire,” “Chicago Fire” in 2012, and “Henry Gamble’s Birthday Party,” released in 2015.In late 2015, Keery was cast in the role of Steve in “Stranger Things.” Originally, he auditioned for the role of Jonathan but later sent in an audition tape for his character. He was reintroduced in the second season, which premiered right before Halloween — October 27, 2017.Keery is also a musician — he was one of the lead guitarists for a Chicago-based garage and psych-rock band, Post Animal. In April 2018, Keery contributed his guitar playing as well as vocals to the sophomore album “When I Think Of You In A Castle.” As of 2019, Keery is no longer a member of the band, yet he does produce his own music 2019 under the pseudonym ‘Djo.’
