Roberta Joan Anderson, famously known as Joni Mitchell, was born in Fort Macleod, Alberta, Canada. She was born to William Andrew Anderson, a Norwegian man who was a Canadian Air Force flight lieutenant, and Myrtle Marguerite, a Scottish-Irish teacher. In school, she had a great interest in literature and was encouraged to write poetry, while also learning to play the piano.Mitchell started producing music and her style of music was greatly appreciated by folk-music-loving people. She then released her first album, “Song to a Seagull,” which was produced by David Crosby. She had her breakthrough after the release of “Blue” which ranked 15th on the U.S. Billboard 200. Another one of her successes was her sixth album titled “Court and Sparks,” which ranked first on the Canadian R.P.M. Albums Chart and the U.S. Billboard 200. She has released countless other albums, including “Mingus,” “Night Ride Home,” “Taming the Tiger,” and “Both Sides Now.” In 2000, she also earned a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame and an honorary doctorate in music from McGill University. She’s won nine Grammy Awards in various categories and was ranked ninth on “Rolling Stone’s” “100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time,” in 2015.Mitchell fell pregnant in college and after the father refused to marry her she took measures to keep her daughter safe and financially taken care of. She tied the knot with Chuck Mitchell in 1965 and, unfortunately, the marriage ended in a divorce, two years later. In 1982, she married Larry Klein, a bassist she used to work with on some of her albums, but they also got divorced in 1994.
