Background
Katy Perry was born in Santa Barbara, California to born–again Christians and Pentecostal pastors Mary Christine and Maurice Keith Hudson. During childhood, Katy often moved around the country as her parents built churches before resettling in Santa Barbara. Her family struggled financially and often got their meals from the food bank intended to feed the congregation at their church. She began vocal training at age 9, taking lessons with her older sister, and sang in her parents’ church from age 9 to 17. Growing up, Perry primarily listened to gospel music but discovered popular secular music through CDs she listened to with friends. She completed her GED at 15, left school to pursue a career in music, and studied Italian opera at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara. Her voice caught the attention of artists Steve Thomas and Jeniffer Knapp who brought her to Nashville to improve her writing skills. She recorded demos and learned to play the guitar before releasing her debut gospel album titled Katy Hudson in 2001. Though she received great critical reviews, her label dropped her due to low record sales. In 2003, she moved to LA at the age of 17 and and started writing songs with producer Glen Ballard. At times she would perform under the name Kathryn Perry (Perry being her mother maiden’s name) in order to avoid confusion with the actress Kate Hudson. After a while, she decided to permanently go by Katy Perry and branded herself under that name. In 2007, she got signed to Capitol Records, who arranged for her and producer Dr. Luke to write an “undeniable smash” to her existing material. Together they co-wrote “I Kissed a Girl” and “Hot n Cold” for her second album One of The Boys
