National Hair Day - National Hair Day 2019 — Ombre's, Up-dos, Cornrows oh my! Whatever your style, October 1 is the day to express yourself and your gorgeous locks!

National Hair Day 2025 – October 1, 2025

Finally! There’s a day to express your love for your hair — National Hair Day on October 1. NuMe, a hair products company,  created this day for people to celebrate hair styling tools and other hair products.Since ancient times women have been obsessed with their hair. Cleopatra washed hers with donkey’s milk! Today, for many women, hair is high maintenance because how you wear your hair makes a statement about you.  So, color your hair purple with polka dots, braid it,  throw a weave in it or just wear your hair short and flirty.  Today is a day to celebrate your personality as personified by your hair and to explore ways to keep it lustrous and healthy. On National Hair Day, work that hair, girlfriend!

National Hair Day timeline

10th Century BC
Hair gels are ancient

In Ancient Egypt, people use hair gel made from a fatty substance to style their hair!

1500
Royal hair means red hair, locks and pin curls

When Queen Elizabeth flaunts this hairstyle, it quickly becomes a fashion trend. Women even pluck their hairlines and eyebrows like Her Majesty!

1920
The bob is all the rage

With women winning the right to vote, time for a more liberating hairstyle: the short bob.

1930
Let's get a perm

Many women, including celebs like Rita Hayworth, visit salons to get perm treatments.

2000s
The Wave sweeps the world

Sun-kissed beachy waves are the popular look and women have several hair tools and products to create them at home or at a salon.

National Hair Day Activities

  1. Try a different hairstyle

A new hairstyle can make you feel powerful, in control, or like a different person. Today is the day you decide who you wanna be!

  2. Share your healthy hair secret

Did a product, pill, or diet work for you? Share your knowledge with others on social media. People benefit by exchanging information.

  3. Give your hair some TLC

Book an appointment at a salon or spa and treat your hair. Healthy hair is beautiful hair.

5 Hair-Raising Facts

  1. Snake-haired monster

In Greek mythology, the monster Medusa has been described as a "wingsnake-skinned" human female with poisonous snakes in place of hair.

  2. The U.S. has the most redheads

Surprising as it may sound, America has the largest population of redheads! Between 2-6% of the country’s population consists of redheads.

  3. A teenage Rapunzel

Keito, a Japanese teen, holds the record for having the longest hair (155.5 centimeters) on a teenager. She has never cut her hair in her life!

  4. Marital status defines hairstyles

Unmarried Fulani women of West Africa dress their hair with small amber beads and coins — while married women wear large amber ornaments.

  5. Hair today — gone tomorrow

People always freak out when they see a few strands on their brush. Fact is, a person can shed between 40 and 150 strands of hair a day!

Why We Love National Hair Day

  1. You can let your hair down

It's easy to get stuck in a hair rut. So, today, break the monotony and do something fun with your hair!

  2. Most women are obsessed with their hair

And many men too! So it's great that we have a day to celebrate our hair.

  3. It's an excuse to pamper your hair

Another reason to take a trip to the salon — sounds good! (While you're there, get a mani/pedi, too!)
