National Teenager Day 2025 – March 21, 2025

National Teenager Day is celebrated on March 21 every year. A teenager is anyone between the ages of 13 and 19 and this is because when you spell the age out it ends with the word ‘teen.’ Teenagers are going through a lot as they are transitioning from childhood to adulthood and experience a lot of changes physical, emotional, and psychological. This is the phase that they discover who they are and what they want to be known for. National Teenager Day is a day set aside for teenagers to know how important and valued they are and to give society a chance to better understand them.

History of National Teenager Day

National Teenager Day was established to create opportunities for teenagers to discover themselves and know who they are, and learn the best way they would want to portray themselves to other people. Many teenagers are referred to as rude, disrespectful and problematic but it is not always so. Deep down they are just confused and overwhelmed by the changes they are experiencing and they just want to be loved and understood.Everything about them is changing, their bodies are changing, their responsibilities are changing, their position in society is changing as they are no longer perceived as children but as adults, and even their brains are changing. In a teenager’s brain, there is a lot of growth and development, which is primarily due to the removal of unused connections in the gray matter (the part of the brain that is used to think and process information) and the strengthening of new connections that will make the brain more efficient. This process starts in the back of the brain and progresses to the front, where the prefrontal cortex is produced last. The prefrontal cortex is an important portion of the brain that is responsible for decision-making, planning, thinking, and problem-solving.Since the prefrontal cortex develops last, teenagers have to rely on the ‘amygdala,’ which is the part of the brain that controls emotional reactions. This is the major reason for teenagers’ sometimes unruly behavior. They are not using the right part of the brain to think and make decisions instead they are using the emotional part which is responsible for their impulsive, aggressive, and instinctive behavior.
