History of National Transplant Financial Coordinator Day
This history of this day starts in 1992, when the Patient Affairs Committee sought approval from the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) to instruct all transplant centers to appoint dedicated staff for providing financial counseling, and sorting insurance difficulties faced by the patients. Later that year, the UNOS proposal sent a proposal that emphasized the importance of the new role of Transplant Financial Coordinator (T.F.C.). A 1998 countrywide survey of 274 transplant hospitals states that 83 of the 133 responding institutions had staff that spent at least half of their work time dealing with the financial concerns of transplant patients.On an average day, coordinators can check patients’ insurance coverage, seek transplant authorization, respond to inquiries, or deal with billing and collections. The results were presented at the sixth annual UNOS Transplant Management Forum. A recommendation for formalizing the position in the UNOS was also presented. Following the June 1999 Board Meeting, the requested recommendations were implemented.On April 10, 2001, the T.F.C.A., which is a non-profit professional organization, signed an agreement of association. Its goal is to consolidate the distribution of helpful financial information related to organ transplants. The organization delivers relevant financial advice to patients and their families while optimizing compensation for their transplant centers. The T.F.C.A. Board of Directors established National Transplant Financial Coordinator Day in November 2020.
