One Boston Day serves as an opportunity to celebrate the resilience and strength shown by the people of Boston and those worldwide in responding to the Boston bombings.

History of One Boston Day

One Boston Day came about as a result of the tragedy of the bombings in Boston, Massachusetts, on April 15, 2013. The 2013 Boston Marathon, organized by the Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.), was the 117th edition of the annual marathon race held in Boston, United States. Moreover, it also played host to the second World Marathon Majors to be held in 2013, with over 23,000 runners participating. The running event was disrupted by a terrorist attack where two consecutive explosions were on the sidewalk and near the finish line. The terrorist attack subsequently caused the competition to be suspended, with many runners unable to participate in the remainder of the match. The attack occurred almost two hours after the competition winners had completed their races. A series of two explosions occurred near the finish line killing three spectators and leaving 264 others injured — with 17 of those injured reported to be in critical condition and at least 14 requiring amputations. Tagged as “The Boston Marathon bombings,” the attack received widespread international media attention. Over 5,000 participants unable to finish due to halted race were given medals. On May 16, a month after the incident, the Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) gave early entry into the 2014 race to participants who ran at least half the distance but could not complete the 2013 Marathon due to the attack. They also waived qualifying standards for these participants. A Pablo Eduardo sculpture was erected in August 2019 on Boylston Street as a memorial to the tragic events of April 15, 2013.
