At home, he typically donned a blue bathrobe, appearing in regular dress only while dealing with officials or people outside his group.Zimmer died while attending Albacon, a science fiction convention in Schenectady, New York, as a guest of honor. He attended in part to see his elder brother on the family farm. He died of a heart attack before aid could arrive. His ashes were cremated and buried in the family grave in Canandaigua, New York.
