Qatar National Day, otherwise known as Founders Day, is celebrated every year on December 18. The holiday commemorates the unification of Qatar in 1878 and was established on June 21, 2007, by former Crown Prince and Heir Apparent of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

History of Republic Day of Qatar

Qatar National Day was established in 2007 by the then Crown Prince and Heir Apparent of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. In previous years, the holiday was celebrated on September 3.The history of the day is traceable to 1878 when Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani became the ruler of the Qatari Peninsula. Jassim, revered as the founder of Qatar, was born around 1825 and was raised in a village in Qatar, known as Fuwayrit. His father was Mohammed bin Thani, emir of the Qatari Peninsula. While serving as deputy to his father, Jassim acquired important political experience.At 21 years of age, Jassim and his father moved to Al Bidda, where he demonstrated leadership skills among his peers. He also valued learning and viewed it as a fundamental value. When he eventually became Emir, his reign established Qatar as a stable country and unified the country’s tribes. To date, the House of Thani remains the ruling family of Qatar.Qatar, officially called the State of Qatar, is a country located in Western Asia. The major ethnic groups in the country are the Arabs, who make up about 40% of the populace, followed by South Asian, Pakistani, Indian, and Iranian ethnic groups. Its major religion is Islam.Qatar has the third-highest G.D.P in the world and is ranked by the United Nations as a country of very high development. The country operates a unitary absolute monarchy, with Tamim bin Hamad as the Emir and Khalid bin Khalifa as the Prime Minister.
