In high school, he received several scholarships but he pledged himself to one, the University of Wisconsin. This commitment was made in September 2016, even before his junior year of high school. This didn’t last though as he de-committed on October 17, right after coach John Calipari of the University of Kentucky came to his school personally to watch him play. He offered Herro a scholarship on October 31 and after visiting the University, he signed the letter of intent with Kentucky on November 14, of the same year.In college, Herro got an average of 14.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and became the only player to start in all 37 games played by the Kentucky Wildcats. He hit a collegiate career-high 29 points to lead the Wildcats to a comeback win over the Arkansas Razorbacks. In April 2019, he declared for the 2019 N.B.A. draft and hired an agent. He was then listed as a mid-first-round selection in most mock drafts. Among his accolades, while in college were, an All-Freshman First Team selection by Basketball Times and the Southeastern Conference Rookie of the Year by the Associated Press. Before being picked by the Miami Heat, Herro was voted amongst his fellow rookies as the best shooter in the 2019 draft class. He made his N.B.A. debut on October 23, 2019, against the Memphis Grizzlies after the Miami Heat had announced that they had signed him.At the 2020 N.B.A. Playoffs, he became the first player in N.B.A. history born in the 2000s to appear in an N.B.A. Conference Final and was named to the 2019 to 2020 N.B.A. All-Rookie Second Team by the N.B.A. He also became the first N.B.A. player under 20 to play in the N.B.A. Final after the Eastern Conference Finals against the Boston Celtics. He managed the most three-pointers made by a rookie in N.B.A. Playoffs ever, accomplishing 45 beyond-the-arc shots while outshining Matt Maloney’s 43.3 PM record during the 1997 N.B.A. Playoffs. He became the first player in Heat franchise history to record at least 30 points and 10 rebounds off the bench, on October 23, 2021.
