World Landscape Architecture Month 2025 – April 2025

World Landscape Architecture Month is celebrated in April. World Landscape Architecture Month is an international commemoration of landscape architecture — modeled private and public areas. It is organized by the American Society of Landscape Architects (A.S.L.A.). Individuals and communities all across the world have deep personal connections to the settings landscape architects design — they just aren’t aware of it. In conjunction with the A.S.L.A., landscape architects from all over the world will highlight these spaces and the role they play in creating a structured and comfortable environment.

History of World Landscape Architecture Month

Landscape architecture is the art of combining man-made structures, such as buildings and asphalt, with natural landscapes and concepts for landform, water, and plants. World Landscape Architecture Month (formerly National Landscape Architecture Month) was established by the American Society of Landscape Architects to honor the ways landscape architects contribute to the welfare of communities. It aims to highlight the fact that more than just structure and green areas are provided by landscape architecture. Before 1800, landscape gardening — later renamed landscape architecture — was primarily concerned with master planning and garden design for large estates, palaces and royal holdings, religious structures, and government buildings. One example is André Le Nôtre’s major work at the Palace of Versailles for King Louis XIV of France. In 1712, Joseph Addison was the first to write about creating a landscape. Gilbert Laing Meason coined the term “landscape architecture” in 1828, and John Claudius Loudon was key in its usage by the modern profession. He adopted the term from Meason and popularized it in his Encyclopedias and his 1840 book on the Late Humphry Repton’s Landscape Gardening and Landscape Architecture. Landscape architects build areas that are supposed to be utilized and enjoyed by everyone, from scenic pathways, gardens, and entire neighborhoods to smoothly running motorways. We celebrate the talent and devotion that these professionals have instilled in their projects during World Landscape Architecture Month.
