Guatemala’s monetary systems deserve special mention for their resilience. Banks and their employees in Guatemala have survived dictators, military rule, volatile revolutions, and regional infighting. Political and social systems in the region were never conducive to stable financial growth. And yet, here we are.

History of Bank Employee Day (Guatemala)

The foundations of Guatemala’s present banking systems go back to 1924. The country was debt-ridden due to the previous government’s policies under Manuel Estrada Cabrera. Cabrera had controlled and dominated all issuing banks until then, triggering a massive financial crisis. It was imperative to rescue the Guatemalan economy before it was too late. From 1924 to 1926, the country saw a period of financial reform and overhaul. The country’s new monetary unit, the Quetzal, came into being for the first time in 1924. On June 30, 1926, the Central Bank of Guatemala was established to continue the momentum of economic reform. Guatemalans finally enjoyed some financial and economic stability — that is, until the Great Depression. A country that had just got back its bearings suffered severely. It was back to the drawing board as outdated monetary policies crumbled under the weight of a global financial crisis.Even after the crisis, it was clear that the markets had irreversibly changed, and Guatemala needed to change with it. New considerations emerged, such as liberalization, computers, telecommunications, and synergies between international markets. In 1993, the country officially kickstarted a program to modernize the national financial system. A system that was 40 years in the making finally experienced order and balance for the first time. Since then, Guatemala’s banks and monetary systems have gone from strength to strength. Bank Employee Day appreciates the people who ensure the country keeps running. Without their efforts, Guatemala might have turned out very differently. Today, bank employees receive their long overdue moments in the spotlight.
