History of Commemoration of General Don Martín Miguel de Güemes

Martín Miguel de Güemes was born on February 8, 1785, to a wealthy and affluent family based in Salta, Argentina. He lived a privileged life, filled with private tutors, influences of high-class Argentiatians, and devoted parents. After completing his education, Güemes joined the army and led the frontline charge to repel the British forces in Rio de la Plata.Several changes swept the nation post the May Revolution of 1810, including the insurgency label charged at the juntas of Argentina. All of this, including his victory in the Battle of Suipacha, prompted Güemes to quit the army and start a grassroots battalion. In 1815, Güemes began training local gauchos and equipped them with guerrilla tactics. Upon his appointment as the Governor of Salta Province, Güemes exerted his influence and extracted a deal that allowed him to lead his forces and aid the armies camped in Buenos Aires.Güemes’ final years bore plenty of unpleasantries for the General, including deposition and a coup. He died in combat at the young age of 36. Güemes is regarded as the revolution’s hero since he led the cavalry in repelling the English attack and mobilized thousands of people to support the cause of freedom. His influence on the populace is still unmatched, and in modern-day Argentina, the Los Infernales army is legendary. Because he was the only general to lose his life in battle, he is honored with a unique public holiday. The country remembers its fearless freedom fighter, whose last words were, “You are leaving behind me, who will know how to defend the homeland.”
