The U.S.A remained the occupying power, with official sanctions from the United Nations. As time passed, the status of the Marshall Islands evolved in the political field. The people of the islands voted for their independence by referendum and drafted a new constitution. Respecting the new status of the Marshall Islands in the political sphere, the U.S.A. recognized the constitution of the Marshallese and the establishment of a new Government of the Republic of the Marshall Islands.
